Georg Kraal - Van Loghem Laureate 2012

Prof. dr. Georg Kraal of the VU medical center in Amsterdam is this year's Van Loghem Laureate. His research group focuses on immune regulation. Understanding the many factors that regulate immunological tolerance and that maintain the right populations of myeloid and lymphoid cells along the mucosal epithelia is an important goal of his research group. In addition, the group focuses on the situation in the intestines in order to study the effect of chronic inflammation on the mucosal immune system. The laureate feels very honored to be this year's laureate. “I am a researcher by nature, endlessly fascinated by the immune system. My motivation has never been to develop medicines or to cure diseases. This being said, immune regulation is extremely relevant to human health and it would be fantastic if we could use our knowledge to the benefit of patients with for instance Crohn's disease.” As Van Loghem Laureate, Georg Kraal has every intention to deliver a captivating speech at the NVVI/Dutch Society for Immunology venue in December. Can't wait that long? An article on the laureate will be available soon on the website of the NVVI.
