310 abstracts submitted
The abstract submission for the Annual Meeting has closed and we received 310 abstracts which are currently being reviewed. Each abstract is ranked by two members of the programme committee and two external reviewers. On the basis of this ranking, the programme committee will put together a program consisting of oral and poster presentations. With such a large number of abstracts to select from, the programme is bound to be exciting! In addition to the presentations selected from abstracts, we have an interesting line-up of keynote speakers and educational tracks.
Georg Kraal - the whole interview
Van Loghem Laureate Georg Kraal: “I belong to the visual type”
Prof. dr. Georg Kraal of the VU Medical Center in Amsterdam is this year's Van Loghem Laureate. He is committed to his research area of immune regulation. “As a researcher, I have no direct intention to develop medicines or cure diseases. This being said, it is clear that the mucosal immune system is vital to human health and it would be fantastic when our research could contribute to curing for instance Crohn's disease.”
We are sorry to announce that Georg Hollander will not be able to present as a keynote speaker at our meeting. We have found Gabriel Victora to fill his slot. Gabriel Victora has studied the selection of B cells during T cell mediated antibody responses. Using multiphoton imaging and photoactivatable green fluorescent proteins expressed in B cells, he managed to visualize the movement of B cells within the germinal center. His work provides evidence that antibody affinity maturation is driven by competition for T cell help.

October 3, 2011 IUIS mourns the loss of Nobel Prize winner, Ralph M. Steinman
“Following the announcement of the 2011 Nobel Prize winners in Physiology or Medicine, we are all honored and sad at the same time. Honored by the public’s acknowledgment of the importance of immunology in medical research, and sad to learn the same day that we lost one of our best scientists, Prof. Ralph Steinman,” said Prof. Stefan H.E. Kaufmann, President of IUIS (International Union of Immunological Societies).
